@@@@@Jason Bourne had to vanish; he had to leave himWhen?
Not now! Out of the early night, the madness began again! From the sky the roar of multiple
engines broke the silence like approaching sharp cracks of lightningThree military helicopters
swooped down toward the Tranquility dock, fusillades of gunfire chewing up the shoreline as a
powerful bullet speedboat swung through the reefs toward the beachJacques was on his
intercom“Shore alarm!” he screamed“Grab your weapons!”
“Christ, the Jackal’s dead!” yelled Conklin
“His goddamned disciples aren’t!” shouted Jason Bourne—no trace of David Webb—as he
shoved Marie to the floor and took a gun out of his belt, a weapon his wife knew nothing about
“They were told he was here!”
    “It’s insane!”
“That’s Carlos,” replied Jason, racing to the balcony railing“He owns them! They’re his for
    life!”
“Shit!” roared Alex as he wheeled his chair furiously and pushed Panov away from the table and
    the lighted candles
Suddenly a deafening loudspeaker from the lead helicopter crackled with static, followed by the
words of the pilot“You saw what we did to the beach, mon! We’ll cut you in two if you don’t stop
your engine! Drift into shore—drift, no motor at all and both of you come on
deck, your hands on the gunwale, leaning forward! Do it now!”
The searchlight beams of the two circling helicopters centered on the boat as the lead aircraft
dropped to the beach, the rotors swirling up the sand, producing an outline of a threshold for its
landingFour men leaped out, their weapons trained on the drifting speedboat as the inhabitants of
Villa Eighteen stood by the railing, staring in astonishment at the unbelievable scene below
“Pritchard!” yelled St“Bring me the binoculars!”
“They’re in my hands, MrSaint Jay—oh, there they are The assistant manager rushed out
with the powerful magnifiers and handed them to his employer“I managed to clean the lenses,
    sir!”
“What do you see?” asked Bourne sharply
    “Some army!” said Conklin
“Give them to me,” ordered Jason, grabbing the binoculars from his brother-in-law
“What is it, David?” shouted Marie, seeing the shock on her husband’s face
    “It’s Krupkin,” he said
Dimitri Krupkin sat at the white wrought-iron table, his face pale—and it was his full face, as his
chin beard had been removed—and refused to speak to anyone until he had finished his third
brandyLike Panov, Conklin and David Webb, he was clearly a hurt man, a wounded man, a man
in considerable physical pain, which, like the others, he did not care to dwell upon, as what lay
ahead was infinitely better than what he had left behindHis decidedly inferior clothes seemed to
annoy him whenever he glanced down at them, but he shrugged continually in silence, the shrugs

They argue for an hour and Hearn listens to the namesA few are familiar to him, Ibsen and Shaw and Galsworthy, but he has never heard of Strindberg, Hauptmann, Marlowe, Lope De Vega, Webster, PirandelloThe names go on, and he tells himself desperately that he must read

He makes a start in the late spring of his first year, rediscovers the volume of Housman that nourished him in prep school, but to it he adds poets like Rilke and Blake and Stephen SpenderBy the time he goes home for the summer he has switched his major to English, and he deserts the beach many afternoons, the Sally Tendeckers and her replacements, spends the nights writing short stories
They are poor enough, but there is a temporary focus of excitement, a qualified successWhen he returns to Harvard, he makes one of the literary magazines in the fall competitions, glares drunkenly into the spotlight at the initiation, and comes off without making too big a fool of himself
The changes come slowly at first, then quicklyHe reads everything, spends a lot of time at Fogg, goes to the symphony on Friday afternoons, absorbs the pleasant connotative smell of old furniture and old prints and the malty odor of empty beer cans in the aged rooms of the magazineIn the spring he wanders through the burgeoning streets of Cambridge, strolls along the Charles, or stands talking outside his house entry while the evening comes, and there is all the magic of freedom
Several times he goes out on drunks to Scollay Square with a friend or twoIt is a self-conscious business with old clothing, an undeviating tour of all the bars and dives
Practice for finding the sawdust saloons on Third Avenue
If there is puke on the floor, they are delighted; they are fraternity men dancing with movie starsBut the moods all changeAfter they become drunk, there is the pleasurable sadness of late spring evenings, the cognition of all hope and longing arrayed against the casual ugly attrition of time
God, look at these people, Hearn says, talk of your animal existence

@@@@@He knew that none of them liked him, and he hardly cared, but now they hated him and he could feel it as almost a leaden oppression in the air
And they had to get upIf they failed, then the thing he had done with Hearn was wrong, and he had been bucking the Army, simply disobeying an orderHe would have to carry the platoon virtually on his back and it was going to be very difficultHe spat, and slit the end off a cardboard K rationAs with everything else, he did this neatly, expertly

Late into the afternoon Ridges and Goldstein struggled along with WilsonThey moved at a torturously slow pace, toting him forward for ten yards or at most fifteen before they set him downAn ant traveling in a straight line would have gone literally as fastThey did not think of quitting or continuing, they hardly ever listened to Wilson's ramblings, there was nothing in all the heat and effort but the dumb imperative to carry him onThey did not talk, they were exhausted beyond speech, they only shambled forward like blind men crossing a strange and terrifying streetTheir fatigue had cut through so many levels, had blunted finally so many of their senses that they were reduced to the lowest common denominator of their existenceCarrying him was the only reality they knew
And so for hours they labored forward, ready to collapse at any moment, but somehow never quite falling unconsciousToward the end they had only a dumb wonder that they could abuse their bodies so mightily and have them still function
Wilson fell into a fever and drifted along in a heavy swell of fogThe jolting of the litter became dull and leaden, almost pleasantThe few words he heard, the hoarse panting communications between Ridges and Goldstein, the sound of his own voice, indeed all sensations entered his head quite separately like doors opening into individual closetsHis senses were exceptionally vivid, he felt every spasm of their muscles in the tremors of the litter, and obversely the pains of his wound seemed remote, something that came to him outside the envelope of his bodyBut one thing had deserted himHe was completely passive, blissfully tired, and it took him minutes to decide to ask for anything, or to bring his hand up to his forehead to chase an insectAnd when he did, his fingers remained motionless on his face for almost as long before he dropped his arm again
He rambled on about anything that came into his mind, talking for minutes at a time, his voice rasping weakly or rising to a shout without any controlAnd the men carrying him listened without understanding the meaning of his words or even caring
